About us

The Mobile and Satellite Communications Research Group targets three key areas of research tackling innovations in mobile and satellite communications engineering:

• Mobile Communication Systems
• Satellite Communication Systems
• Dynamic Resource Management

Our members have diverse educational and multi-disciplinary expertise that provide a rich platform for promoting high impact research outcomes. 

The group’s interests are aligned with addressing key industry and societal challenges that include sustainability goals, automation, and personalisation. Most of our research is led or supported by international mobile and satellite stakeholders.

Funding successes

Group members have been very successful on European research grants, having either participated in or coordinated European collaborative projects that include Marie Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks; Marie Curie Actions Research and Innovation Staff Exchange Evaluations, Horizon 2020 Joint Undertakings in embedded systems and nanotechnology disciplines; ICT (Information and Communication Technology), and Celtic Eureka, amongst others. 

Other successful sources of funding include Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), British Council, ARABSAT and Innovate UK

Key collaborations 

• Coordinating the H2020 MCSA 5GACE project and sit on the technical advisory board for European projects funded under the H2020 framework and NATO - Emerging Security Challenges division
  
  
• Part of the Communication Systems Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics that organises the annual International Communications and Satellite Systems Conference 

• Work with the Institution of Engineering and Technology to produce the annual publication Advances in Communications Satellite Systems
  
  
• Memorandum of understanding with the Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency for space-related research and training
  
  
• Working with University of Bolton’s School of Engineering on the British Council Newton Funded project 'Employing ICT for Environmental Protection and Pollution Monitoring'
